Case Study: Delivering an Integrated Retrofit Solution Designed for Scale
Overview
Our system is an innovative, integrated retrofit solution that transforms outdated homes to near new-build standards, delivering properties capable of achieving EPC A.
Designed for landlords and local authorities, our system brings together fabric, ventilation, energy, and future-readiness measures into a single, coordinated delivery model – creating warmer, healthier, and more energy-efficient homes at scale.
The Challenge
Scaling domestic retrofit presents major barriers, including high costs, fragmented delivery, resident disruption, and uncertainty around future low-carbon technologies.
Our system addresses these challenges through a designed package of works and a phased retrofit approach, ensuring immediate performance improvements while future-proofing homes for technologies such as air source heat pumps.
The Solution
Following a detailed retrofit assessment by Bow Tie Construction, a decision was taken to retain the existing boiler while installing the infrastructure required for a future heat pump upgrade.
This approach enables:
- Cost-effective delivery today
- Reduced risk around warranties and maintenance
- Seamless future transition to low-carbon heating
- Phased retrofit, with readiness from day one, is the key to delivering retrofit at scale.
Retrofit Measures Delivered
- UltraPanel structural panel system
- Mechanical Extract Ventilation (MEV) to kitchens, bathrooms, and under-floor spaces
- Window repairs (where required) and moisture-sensitive trickle vents.
- Airtight loft hatch and loft improvements • Solar PV and battery storage
- Whole-house draught proofing
- Heating system upgrade readiness for future air source heat pump installation
Delivery & Outcomes
- Works completed in just 4 weeks
- Minimal resident disruption
- Significant improvement in energy efficiency and comfort
- EPC A capability achieved.
- Replicable model for large-scale retrofit programmes
The demonstrator launched successfully on 9 December 2025, with lessons learned captured to support wider rollout across housing portfolios.
